Hi there on this gorgeous Monday morning!!!! I’m sure everyone is still in festive mode and enjoyed the holidays spending time with family and friends. There is nothing like a festive celebration that brings us all together especially in today’s fast paced world when it can get all too easy to get caught up in the grind of daily life.
I love holidays… it means having the kids at home and spending time together with their father doing ‘family’ sort of things…. Some years ago i watched the Bucket List and I remember poignantly that it was a wonderful way of listing down things that you’d want to do, no matter how silly they may seem and getting it done one by one. Whilst I dont have a bucket list of my own no doubt due to sheer procrastination – yes, I am one of those people, I’ve always encouraged my children to make little lists of what they want to do and give us those lists so that we can work on those as a family unit.
I do that for 2 reasons, firstly because my children are no longer ‘babies’. Many will probably tell you that caring for a baby may be the hardest thing you do as a mother… Once again, the answer to that open ended question is YES, it is but when you’re firstborn turns 9 and towers to your shoulders …all you can sometimes do is just wish that you could turn back the clock and have her in your hands as a little baby.
And secondly because i find that time in no longer my friend…. Me & time used to be really good buddies. I reckon it used to wait for me because I can remember there were those days when I could while the day away and I’d still have more than half a day left. However that really does not work for me anymore, me and time must have had a falling off because ‘he’ rushes by all the time with neither a hey or hello.. and so because ‘he’ insists that time must fly.. . i now insist that I must make the most of that precious commodity with the people who matter the most to me.
One of the things that my children put on their list very frequently is going to the beach. What is it with children and sand? For them it’s kinetic wonder for me, it’s grit in my teeth 😛 For them it’s hours of play and for me , it’s hours spent hiding under a big, beach hat feeling hot and sticky. I think the only time I’m about happy is when I’m lying back in the water with my head up to the sky.
Because holidays are ‘bonus’ time for bonding and because my kids love the beach, I try to incorporate as much beach as I can into their holidays. Our ‘family’ holidays are not just about us, I always make it a point to take my parents every other time we go…. I do that because I am constantly reminded that I would never be where I am today without my parents and as much as I want my children to remember and have great memories of growing up, of spending time not only with each other but of exploring nature. I want them to realize that it is important to spend time as a family and with your family as because all too soon they will be much, much older and get caught up with a million other things that define the way we live.
But holidays aren’t just about going off to the beach… there have been many a time when a holiday meant a picnic in a park. With buns and biscuits and bottles of juice, there is so much joy to be had when you’re spending it with those you love.
I guess what I’m coming to is that when you have some time on your hands, wouldn’t it be absolutely wonderful to spend it with family. There is great rewards in making those lists and should you already have such a list, you can actually put it to good use immediately .
Here are some of my favorite Friso Gold Moments… Perhaps they would work for you too 🙂
